Racing and sports-car company, founded by the
Italian Ettore Bugatti (1881-1947). The first
car was produced 1908, but it wasn't until
1924 that one of the great Bugattis, Type 35,
was produced. Bugatti cars are credited with
more race wins than any other. The company
was taken over by Hispano Suiza after
Bugatti's death in 1947. The Type 35 is
credited with 2,000 race wins and dominated
motor racing 1924-26. Bugatti also built
classic road cars, including the Royale. All
Bugatti's cars bore a distinctive
horseshoe-shaped radiator. In 1986, a
second-hand Bugatti exchanged hands for a
world record $8.1 million.
